Carlsberg Canada has received the Region of Waterloo’s Water Efficiency Excellence Award for its sub-metering project. We designed and installed the monitoring system and continue to work with the brewery team on the readings.
The project gives people across the facility a shared view of water use. Incoming supply, internal processes and wastewater appear on the dashboard, so the team can follow water through the brewery and check what changes when they adjust a process.

What changed at the brewery
Between 2023 and 2024, the brewery reduced its water use by more than 100,000 m³. That is a comparison between those years, measured on the meters we installed.
In our LinkedIn account of the project, we put the ongoing annual water and wastewater saving at more than $500,000, by our estimate. That estimate applies a combined rate above $5/m³ to the measured reduction and assumes the reduction continues. The dollar figure is our calculation, rather than a separate result reported by CTV.

Keeping the readings useful
The Energy Management Information System (EMIS) brings water, electricity and natural gas into one centralized dashboard. Operators can see what equipment is doing during production, while managers can review the same readings away from the facility.
We use that shared view to work through questions with the brewery team. A change in water use has context: what was running, what had stopped and whether the next shift saw the same pattern. Monitoring stays in place after a change, so the team can check its effect over time.

For us, the ongoing work matters as much as the installation. The brewery team can keep using the system to investigate changes and review the effect of their decisions.
